Ligament tear in the ankle joint

When an ankle ligament is torn, the foot has usually twisted significantly, causing the ligaments to tear. This often leads to swelling above and below the outside of the ankle. It is also commonly accompanied by bruising on the outside and/or inside of the ankle.

Torn ankle ligament symptoms

A partial tear can be very painful, while a completely torn ligament may not cause immediate pain. Bruising or swelling often develops around the ankle, which is visible as discoloration below the ankle. Sometimes this extends to the edge of the sole of the foot, appearing 24 to 28 hours after the injury.

Torn ankle ligament causes

The most common cause is a severe misstep or fall. This usually happens on uneven terrain, sports fields, slanted paving stones, grassy areas, and similar surfaces. It often involves uncontrolled movements, for example during sports.

Torn ankle ligament treatment

A torn ankle ligament can heal within six weeks. You may experience pain in the initial period, which usually disappears within a few weeks. It can take several months before the swelling goes down completely. To support proper healing of the ligaments, tape or a bandage is often applied. If you suspect a fracture a few hours after the trauma, it is important to consult a doctor.

A fracture can be identified by the following symptoms: rapid swelling, a cracking sound, and being unable to bear weight on the ankle. This will usually require a cast or surgery. For proper rehabilitation or to help prevent this type of injury, we offer a variety of ankle braces at Podobrace that can provide support for this condition.
