Calf / Shin Fracture

A broken fibula is a fracture in the lower leg. It is also referred to as a fibula fracture. A break in the fibula usually occurs due to trauma. Curious to learn more about the causes, symptoms, and treatment? Feel free to read on. We’ll explain it in detail.

What is a broken fibula or fibula fracture?

A broken fibula or fibula fracture is a bone break in the lower leg. The lower leg consists of the fibula and the tibia. In most cases, a fibula fracture occurs at the lower end, near the ankle. A break at the upper end of the fibula is much less common.

The causes

A fibula fracture is often caused by trauma, such as an accident or a fall. The force on the bone is so great that it breaks. It is also possible that the bone is locally weakened, making it more susceptible to breaking. This weakening can be caused by conditions such as osteoporosis.

The symptoms of a broken fibula

Immediately after the fracture, it is no longer possible to put weight on the leg. You will experience severe (pressure) pain. It’s also possible that the lower leg appears misaligned. If the break is located at the lower end of the fibula, you will feel intense pain when moving the ankle. The ankle will swell and become discolored.

If the fracture is at the upper end of the fibula, ankle movement usually does not cause pain. This type of break may not be visible. If any discoloration occurs, it typically appears on the outside of the lower leg (just below the knee).

Treatment of a fibula fracture

A fibula fracture must always be treated in a hospital. The type of treatment depends on the specific fracture. Some fractures can heal with the help of a walking cast. Complicated fractures may require surgery.

During the rehabilitation of a broken fibula, guidance from a physiotherapist is recommended. It's important to rebuild muscle strength, flexibility, and load capacity. This can be done, for example, by doing exercises. Additionally, wearing a calf brace can provide support during recovery.
