Foot Drop

Our podiatrists at Podobrace explain more on this page about foot drop. This condition can lead to painful and uncomfortable symptoms, so it’s understandable that you may have questions. Fortunately, there are effective tools and treatments available to quickly reduce the discomfort associated with foot drop. We’ll explain everything you need to know below.

What is foot drop exactly?

Foot drop refers to the inability to lift the front part of the foot, caused by weakened or paralyzed muscles. These muscles are commonly referred to as foot lifters. When they no longer function properly, it can become difficult or impossible to raise your foot, causing it to drag along the ground while walking.

There are three muscles responsible for lifting the foot, all controlled by the same nerve: the peroneal nerve (nervus peroneus). When this nerve becomes damaged or compressed, it can impair muscle function and result in foot drop.

What causes foot drop?

Excessive pressure on the peroneal nerve can occur due to a variety of reasons. It may be the result of an acute injury, such as an ankle sprain, that damages the nerve. However, foot drop can also develop gradually due to conditions like diabetes, which can affect nerve function over time.

Another common cause of foot drop is a herniated disc in the spine, which can compress the nerve and interfere with its function.

What are the symptoms?

The most common symptoms of foot drop include:

  • Pain across the top of the foot
  • Tingling or numbness in the foot
  • Inability or difficulty lifting the toes or front of the foot

How is foot drop treated?

In most cases, foot drop can be effectively treated without surgery. We recommend first consulting a physiotherapist, who can guide you through targeted exercises to help restore muscle function. Recovery from foot drop can take several months, and in some cases up to a year.

To support the recovery process, you can use a foot drop brace or wear custom insoles designed to relieve pressure and assist in foot movement.

At the bottom of this page, our Podobrace physiotherapists have selected a number of braces and insoles specifically designed for foot drop. These tools can help relieve your symptoms and ensure a smoother and faster recovery.
