Joint Capsule Problems (specifically with accumulation of fluid around the ankle)
Ankle synovitis is also known as inflammation of the joint fluid in the ankle. This type of inflammation causes swelling, stiffness, and pain in the joint. On the inner side of the joint capsule lies the synovial membrane. This membrane ensures that the joint stays lubricated with synovia, which is joint fluid. Synovia reduces friction between bones, making joint movement easier. When an ankle trauma occurs, fluid may build up inside the joint. This swelling can put pressure on the synovial membrane. If this happens in combination with physical activity, such as prolonged walking, the synovial fluid can become irritated, leading to inflammation. When this occurs, we refer to it as ankle synovitis.
Causes of fluid buildup around the ankle
Fluid buildup around the ankle can result from the following factors:
- Previous trauma to the joint
- Uneven or poor surfaces
- Poor biomechanics
- Instability of the ankle joint
- Improper footwear or insoles
- Joint immobility
- History of injury
- Poor foot posture
- Overuse

Signs/symptoms of fluid buildup around the ankle
Almost every ankle injury involves some degree of joint fluid. This usually subsides as the body’s natural healing process begins. When the swelling persists, the condition is known as ankle synovitis. People with this injury typically experience symptoms at the front, back, or side of the ankle. It is often the result of a sprain that did not heal properly.
Symptoms are usually worse in the morning, during rest, or after physical activity. Complaints may be triggered by walking or running, especially on uneven surfaces. The ankle may also be tender to the touch.
Treatment of fluid buildup around the ankle
Most people respond well to treatment through physiotherapy. A combination of ice therapy, stretching, dry needling, exercise therapy, sports massage, activity modification, medical taping, easy-taping, and joint mobilization can help relieve the injury. Medical research has shown that a brace can be particularly effective for this condition. At Podobrace, we offer various ankle braces that provide support for this complaint.
