Overused Ankle

Tendon overuse can occur in various areas of the body, including the ankle. Tendon problems generally follow around five stages, although not all stages may be experienced. These types of issues usually develop gradually.

  • At the start of exercise, there is some pain, which disappears once you start moving. Shortly afterward, the pain returns and lasts longer—often until the next day.
  • After exercising or movement, there is stiffness, fatigue, and pain that lasts for several hours.
  • The pain is present during activity and remains throughout the day. Only prolonged rest has an effect.
  • The pain becomes so intense that exercising is no longer possible.
  • There is significant pain, even without any physical load. Even extended rest no longer provides relief.

In some chronic cases, a calcium deposit may be visible on an X-ray. With long-term tendon problems, the tendon can weaken, and in some cases, even lead to muscle tears.

Causes of ankle overuse

There are many potential causes of tendon issues:

  • Limited ankle mobility
  • Weak muscles
  • Hard surfaces
  • Shortened muscles
  • Skipping or insufficient warm-up and/or cool-down
  • Excess body weight
  • Overuse due to excessive training, improper training progression, or irregular sports activity
  • Wearing the wrong shoes
  • Poor foot alignment (e.g., leg length discrepancy, flat feet)
  • Inadequate cushioning in the sole and heel relative to the surface
  • Continuing to train despite symptoms
  • Ankle instability

Based on the underlying cause of the complaint, a specialist will create an appropriate treatment plan. In many cases, a brace is recommended to support recovery. At Podobrace, we offer a range of ankle braces that can provide support for this condition.
