Meniscus Problems

Meniscus problems and meniscus-related issues are common and can cause significant discomfort during physical activity. At Podobrace, we have helped many patients and individuals with meniscus problems over the years, and specifically for the meniscus, we have selected the best braces for meniscus issues.

What is the meniscus?

The meniscus is cartilage located between the upper and lower leg. There are two menisci in the knee: one on the inside (medial meniscus) and one on the outside (lateral meniscus) of the knee. The menisci act as shock absorbers and are made of a special type of cartilage. They absorb forces that impact the knee during activities such as running and jumping. The meniscus reduces friction between the thigh bone and the shin bone. Additionally, the menisci serve as a protective layer for the cartilage in the knee. Without the meniscus, the knee joint would wear out quickly! The meniscus also contributes to the stability of the knee.

What are the symptoms of meniscus problems?

  • Knee locking
  • A feeling of the knee giving way
  • Pain when pressing on the knee
  • Swelling in the knee during or after exercise
  • A twisted knee can cause a meniscus tear, which is characterized by sudden sharp pain and swelling in the knee.

How can I prevent meniscus pain?

  • Avoid deep knee bends and/or frog jumps
  • Maintain good physical condition
  • Excess weight worsens meniscus problems, so losing weight is recommended
  • Use a knee brace to absorb shocks
