Sprains / Strains / Bruises / Contusions (distortion)
A thumb sprain, twist, strain, bruise or distortion is usually caused by a fall or a hard blow to the thumb. This often occurs in ball sports. In a thumb sprain, the ligaments of the thumb are stretched or torn. Swelling and reduced mobility often occur.
Thumb – Symptoms of a sprained thumb
Stretching or tearing of the ligaments leads to pain and in most cases, after 24 hours, also to swelling, discoloration, and warmth. These are the same symptoms as with a fracture of the thumb. There is often reduced function when bending and extending the thumb. In the case of a complete rupture of the ligaments, we speak of a dislocation, and in some cases, casting or surgery is chosen.
Thumb – Treatment of the thumb
It is important to keep the thumb moving to prevent stiffness. It is also helpful to regularly cool the thumb to reduce pain and swelling. The pain may persist for a long time after the injury. In the case of an acute injury, it is important to rest first — the thumb should not be strained during the first 48 hours. You can use the RICE method: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. After this period, and in the case of prolonged injury, it is advisable to tape the thumb or use a brace for full recovery without any complications.
