Thumb Support / Thumb Splint
What is a thumb support?
A thumb splint is a device designed to provide support, stabilisation and protection to the thumb. It can consist of only flexible materials such as neoprene, Velcro or elastic bands, but the brace can also feature boning or hardened splints.
How does a thumb support work?
The thumb brace gives you support when you have pain in the thumb joint. There are braces with different levels of protection. The thumb brace with a low protection level supports and protects the thumb when performing certain movements. A thumb brace with a high protection level can also completely immobilise the thumb joint, preventing certain movements from being carried out. This gives the joint rest, and it will recover from the symptoms over time.
Can a thumb splint get wet?
The thumb splint, or thumb brace, should never get wet. Of course, the brace can be washed briefly by hand, but we recommend never swimming or showering with the brace. This may cause the Velcro fasteners to fray and lose their function.
Can you play sport with a thumb support?
Various injuries can occur during sport. To prevent this as much as possible, wearing a thumb brace is recommended. It provides support and protection to the thumb. There are various sports you can play with a thumb brace, such as basketball, volleyball, tennis, fitness and football.
How long should I wear a thumb support?
How long someone should wear a thumb brace is different for each complaint and person. Because everybody is unique, some people will get rid of the complaint a little sooner than others. In some cases, there are even permanent complaints, such as osteoarthritis. Specialists therefore recommend only wearing the thumb brace or thumb splint when you actually experience pain. So for example, if you experience symptoms while working or doing household activities, really only wear the brace or splint during these moments.
