Hallux Rigidus
What is hallux rigidus?
Hallux rigidus is a stiffening of the joint of the big toe. This stiffening occurs because the joints between the bones and toes become worn after prolonged pressure. Hallux is a Latin name for big toe and so rigidus means stiff. This complaint causes pain and stiffness of the joint at the big toe. The skin around the joint may also become thick, painful and red. Fortunately, there are cheap, painless ways to solve hallux rigidus. On this complaints page, we will go into this in more detail, so read on quickly below.
What is the cause of hallux rigidus?
Hallux rigidus can occur due to various causes. We explain the most common causes to you below:
- Some sports have a much higher risk of hallux rigidus. These are mainly sports involving kicking a ball or a lot of jumping. This can actually cause the wear and tear on the cartilage at the big toe to increase, which can cause hallux rigidus. It can also cause fractures at the toe, which can then also contribute to this complaint.
- Foot deformities can also cause hallux rigidus. For example, hallux valgus. Hallux valgus is an abnormality of the big toe, this can cause your pressure point at the big toe to be enlarged causing hallux rigidus. Hallux rigidus can also occur because you have flat feet or overpronation, for example. Fortunately, with these foot abnormalities, you can also use insoles for the respective abnormality. For example, flatfoot insoles, overpronation insoles or insoles for hallux valgus. This ensures that the pressure is distributed correctly and reduces the risk of hallux rigidus a lot. It also reduces symptoms if you already suffer from hallux rigidus.
- Joint inflammations such as gout or rheumatism can also contribute to bone problems around the affected joint.
- Finally, osteoarthritis can be a cause.
What are the symptoms?
Hallux Rigidus is an annoying complaint and can cause painful symptoms. The most common symptoms are listed below.
